HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Voters in Ward 4 on Hilton Head Island will choose between a sitting council member and a first-time challenger on Nov. 3. Tamara Becker, on Town Council since 2018, is being opposed by Rick Ross.
The ward takes in Palmetto Dunes and Indigo Run. Ross, an island resident for 20 years, flies as a Boeing 747 captain and works in real estate.
Becker is pitching experience. She lists roads and infrastructure as a top priority and wants to keep buying land for conservation so it can never be developed. On traffic, she says the island signal system has fallen short and should be replaced with a coordinated network that moves cars more smoothly across the whole island.
Ross says the council has grown too divided and is running on civility and accountability. He names traffic, public safety, workforce housing and development as the biggest problems. He wants independent traffic engineers to study the worst intersections and signal timing, more visible police patrols and incentives for workforce housing.
The seat is one of four on the ballot. The mayor post and the Ward 2 and Ward 5 seats are also contested, and council members serve four-year terms. The county elections board in Beaufort County runs the vote, and polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.
