What SC Voters Need to Know Before Electing a Gov. Tuesday

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Early voting is over in South Carolina, and everyone who has not voted yet now has one day to do it. Polling places open at 7 a.m. Tuesday and close at 7 p.m., and the State Election Commission says anyone already standing in line at 7 p.m. still gets to cast a ballot.

Before leaving home, voters should look up their polling place and preview their sample ballot at scVOTES.gov or through their county voter registration office. A valid photo ID is required at the polls.

Absentee voters face stricter rules. A completed absentee ballot must reach the county voter registration office by 7 p.m. Tuesday, and it cannot be dropped off at a regular polling place. Election officials suggest carrying it in rather than mailing it this late. The voter oath must be signed, and the return envelope needs a witness who also writes down an address. Someone else can bring in a ballot for a voter only if the authorized returnee form is filled out, and anyone returning a ballot in person has to show photo ID.

Every statewide constitutional office is on the ballot. For governor, Republican Attorney General Alan Wilson faces Democratic state Rep. Jermaine Johnson. Wilson spent the past two weeks on a bus tour around the state that included a Thursday rally with President Donald Trump in Rock Hill, while Johnson appeared Thursday at Benedict College in a student forum alongside treasurer candidate Vincent Coe.

In the treasurer race, Coe, a Democrat, is challenging Republican Curtis Loftis, who has held the office since 2011 and is seeking a fifth term. The U.S. Senate race pits Sen. Darline Graham against Democrat Annie Andrews, and the attorney general contest matches Republican David Stumbo and Democrat Richard Hricik. State House and local races fill out the ballot.

Results will be posted on scVOTES.gov as counties report on election night.
