BEAUFORT, S.C. — The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is looking into people who work for county government, an inquiry that County Administrator Michael Moore asked the agency to take on.
The sheriff’s office confirmed the investigation Monday in a short advisory, released after several news organizations asked whether deputies were examining the county’s administration.

Who is under review remains unknown. The agency has not named any of the personnel involved or said what kind of matter it is examining, and sheriff’s spokesman Daniel Allen said nothing more can be shared for now.
It is rare for the county’s own law enforcement agency to investigate the government it serves. The step follows by about a week the county’s release of findings from a separate review of how officials handled the case of Pinky Harriott, the county’s former finance chief, who was pushed to resign about five months ago.
The county government, which serves Hilton Head Island along with Beaufort, Bluffton and the rest of the county, has not said whether any employees have been placed on leave. No charges have been announced.
