Golf Cart Witches Crawl Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — The witches came out in force Saturday night, Oct. 24, at Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head in Hardeeville, and they traveled by golf cart.

Residents of the 55-and-over community turned Halloween into a rolling block party, lining up decorated golf carts for a crawl that wound from one neighbor’s driveway to the next. At each stop, people lingered to visit, swapping treats, Halloween wishes and, for some, an adult beverage or two. Plenty of riders and hosts came in costume, with pointed black hats, capes and at least one wig in hot pink setting the tone.

As the sky over the pines turned orange near sunset, a long line of carts stretched down a residential street lined with palm trees and light-colored homes. At one stop, a crew of costumed hosts set out a curbside table loaded with trays of snacks and sweets and a glass drink dispenser, handing out treats while drivers waited their turn to pull up.

The crawl capped a full Saturday. Earlier that day, residents gathered for a Fins Ball fundraiser that raised money for local breast cancer charities. Fins Ball, the community’s favorite game, is a baseball-style sport played with a plastic ball, and the Hilton Head community plays it on its Fins Fields complex.

A neighborhood built for getting together

Nights like this are a big part of what draws people here. Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head is an active, engaged community where neighbors build friendships and keep life lively, and holidays become an excuse for everyone to come outside.

The calendar rarely sits empty. Live music plays every day in the Latitude Town Center, a short golf cart ride from residents’ homes. The Lake Latitude Club adds a lakeside sandy beach, a pool and miles of water trails for kayaking, paddle boarding and canoeing, while tennis, pickleball and bocce courts keep the competitive crowd busy. Charter clubs and interest groups give newcomers plenty of ways to meet the people next door.

Put it together and a Saturday can hold a charity ballgame in the afternoon and a costumed cart parade at sunset, with friends waiting at nearly every driveway.

A golf cart town with a Hilton Head name

Despite the name, the neighborhood sits on the mainland. Minto Communities, which develops it with the Margaritaville brand, places it within Hardeeville city limits, in Jasper County, along Highway 278 roughly 2.5 miles east of Interstate 95.

Minto first announced the Hardeeville site in May 2017 as the second Latitude Margaritaville location, planned across 2,739 acres. It became the second of the communities to open, with plans for about 3,000 homes. The Latitude Town Center opened its first amenities in March 2020 and finished its final phase in December 2022, adding the Last Mango Theater for shows and dances.

Carts are a big part of daily life there, which makes a Halloween parade of them a natural fit.
