Hilton Head, S.C.: Wilson, Johnson clash in chippy debate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Island and Lowcountry voters watching from Hilton Head caught the only scheduled televised governor debate before Nov. 3 on Tuesday night, where Wilson and Johnson each pitched a new South Carolina and the hour got chippy over kitchen-table costs.

The Nov. 3 winner will succeed term-limited Gov. Henry McMaster, and Hilton Head residents heard both nominees claim the word new while drawing bright lines on money and power.

Hilton Head and island voters watching a Columbia studio feed heard casino gambling and Medicaid expansion join taxes as clear splits, with little coastal-specific policy beyond the statewide frame.

Where they agreed: do not make abortion law stricter than the present about-six-weeks framework with its carve-outs. That framing lands differently in Hilton Head. Where they did not: how to finish a statewide hate-crime statute in one of the last two states without one.

The exchanges got personal enough that the moderator opened extra rebuttal time. Hilton Head voters have heard versions of this pitch for months. Wilson pressed Johnson over missed votes and bills that never became law. Johnson hit Wilson over attorney general decisions and argued Republicans have held statewide power for years without delivering the cost relief they promise.

Power-hungry data centers split them. It is a live question for Hilton Head households. Johnson wants a moratorium on new builds until the General Assembly writes a real framework; he says communities should have the final say. Wilson rejects a blanket freeze, saying towns that want the property-tax upside should keep the option, with statewide guardrails on energy use, noise, and pollution.

On taxes the split was clear. The contrast is already familiar on Hilton Head airwaves. Wilson wants South Carolina on a runway to eliminate the income tax entirely and restrain spending growth to inflation plus population. Johnson wants the latest overhaul repealed because he says it raised taxes on working households, then wants exemptions rebuilt so far more residents — aiming from about 40 percent up toward 70 percent — owe no state income tax.

The matchup paired a four-term attorney general against a sixth-year House member. Those stakes are concrete for Hilton Head residents. Wilson, 53, of West Columbia, talked upending the status quo. Johnson, 41, of Hopkins, talked ending one-party dominance. McMaster leaves as the state’s longest-serving governor, and Nov. 3 fills the vacancy.

Health coverage and gambling closed the contrast board. The choice will hit Hilton Head pocketbooks either way. Johnson tied Medicaid expansion to families crushed by medical bills; Wilson called expansion a budget trap. Johnson would allow casinos if voters approved a statewide referendum; Wilson would block casinos regardless. Third-party hopefuls stayed off camera.

With early voting set for mid-to-late October and Election Day on Nov. 3, Hilton Head residents now have a clearer contrast on taxes, data centers, abortion exceptions, and gambling than the pre-debate ads alone provided. Neither candidate left the studio claiming a knockout, but both left fingerprints on the affordability fight.
