HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Hilton Head, S.C., area is dealing with dangerous winds and coastal flooding this week as the National Weather Service’s Charleston office forecasts gusty conditions over Beaufort County’s islands and beaches.
Wind gusts between 35 and 40 mph are expected Tuesday on the islands and beaches. Gusts will be weaker inland but still hazardous on elevated bridges. Minor tree damage and damage to poorly built structures are possible Tuesday before winds ease Wednesday morning.

Minor coastal flooding is expected at high tide Tuesday afternoon, with saltwater inundation of about half a foot. Minor flooding is also possible Wednesday evening. A high rip-current risk is in place Tuesday, with elevated risks Wednesday and Thursday.
A separate coastal forecast for Beaufort and Jasper shores puts a High Surf Advisory in effect through 2 p.m. Wednesday with breaking waves of 4 to 7 feet, and warns that beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions are possible around high tide.
Residents and visitors are urged to use caution on bridges, avoid flooded roadways and stay out of the surf while advisories remain active.
