History

Spanish Wells takes its name from Spanish colonial explorers who came ashore on the northwest tip of Hilton Head to dig freshwater wells — evidence of European contact predating English settlement on the island. For much of its modern history the area was a working fishing enclave; Charlie Simmons Sr., known locally as 'Mr. Transportation,' operated Simmons Fishing Camp here, providing rest for travelers crossing to and from the mainland before the bridge era. The community also housed a boxing gym that produced professional heavyweight boxers the Cohen family. The gated residential community that exists today developed in the latter decades of the 20th century, capitalizing on the area's exceptional Calibogue Sound deepwater access — among the deepest natural channels on the island — to attract sportfishing and boating-oriented buyers.
