History

Palmetto Bluff's 20,000 acres along the May River have a continuous human history stretching back to the Yemassee people. European plantation development arrived in the 17th century; the land later passed to Richard Thornton Wilson Sr., a New York financier and son of a Confederate general, who built a country estate — the architectural predecessor to today's Wilson Village — in the early 20th century. For much of the 20th century the property was held by the Union Camp Corporation for industrial timber. In 2000, the land was purchased by a real estate development partnership who undertook years of planning before launching Palmetto Bluff as a conservation-focused luxury residential community. The Palmetto Bluff Conservancy was established to permanently protect thousands of acres. The Montage Hotels & Resorts opened Montage Palmetto Bluff within the community, which opened to international acclaim. Today Palmetto Bluff encompasses multiple villages, a 200-slip marina, a golf course, and over 100 miles of trails.
