History

Hilton Head Plantation was developed beginning in the late 1970s on the northern third of Hilton Head Island, along the deep tidal waters of Skull Creek and Calibogue Sound. As the island's largest gated residential community, it grew through the 1980s and 1990s around two golf clubs — the Country Club of Hilton Head and Bear Creek Golf Club — and the sheltered deepwater access of Skull Creek Marina on the Intracoastal Waterway. The plantation's location near the island's only bridge made it attractive to full-time residents and retirees seeking convenient mainland access. Today the HHPOA maintains 54 miles of leisure trails, five community pools, and extensive natural areas along the marsh.
