Hilton Head Island, S.C. — A driver died early Monday in a head-on crash on US Highway 17 near Okatie Highway in Jasper County after traveling the wrong way into a tractor-trailer, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
Troopers said the crash happened at about 1:16 a.m. Monday. A 2014 BMW X1 was traveling south in the northbound lanes of US Highway 17 when it struck a tractor-trailer that was traveling north in the correct lanes near the Okatie Highway intersection.
The driver of the BMW died in the crash. The tractor-trailer driver was injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating, and the Jasper County Coroner Office had not publicly released the identity of the person who died.
Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed the Monday crash details, including that the BMW was traveling south in the northbound lanes and that the tractor-trailer driver was treated at a hospital.
The Monday wreck came a day after a separate fatal single-vehicle crash Sunday morning on Marshland Road near Leg O Mutton Road on Hilton Head Island, where a Dodge Charger left the roadway and struck a utility pole and trees. That Sunday crash is a separate investigation.
