Known Hotspots

Beaufort County Crash Hotspots

US-278 (William Hilton Parkway) Primary east-west corridor across Hilton Head Island from the bridges to Sea Pines Circle. High-volume intersections at Palmetto Dunes, Forest Beach, and the roundabout at Sea Pines Circle generate frequent rear-end and sideswipe incidents, especially during peak tourist season.
US-278 at Bluffton Parkway / Buckwalter Pkwy (Bluffton) Fast-growing Bluffton commercial corridor. High-volume intersections at Buckwalter and Simmonsville Road see frequent rear-end crashes as development density has outpaced signal timing.
SC-170 (Hilton Head Gateway / May River Road) Southern Beaufort County connector between US-278 and Beaufort. Speed transitions from rural to suburban sections and intersections at Bluffton Pkwy produce run-off-road and intersection crashes.
Cross Island Parkway (SC-341) Hilton Head Island's toll expressway — faster north-south connector. Merges and off-ramps at US-278 require lane changes that produce merge-related incidents.
US-278 Bridges (Hilton Head Island to Mainland) The two bridges onto Hilton Head Island — James F. Byrnes Bridge and the older trestle — are evacuation chokepoints and see major backup events during weather events, golf tournament week, and summer weekends.
