Heads Up, Myrtle Beach! Tropical Storm Debby Is On Its Way
If you’re in the Myrtle Beach area, it’s time to pay attention. Tropical Storm Debby is brewing and expected to bring some serious weather our way this week. According to the latest briefing from the National Weather Service on August 4, we could see flooding and an astounding 8 inches of rain as the storm passes through.
What’s in Store?
Debby is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it moves through the Gulf of Mexico. After making landfall in Florida, the storm will push inland through Florida and Georgia, and then likely make its way toward our beloved Carolinas. The good news? We might start seeing signs of Debby this Sunday, but the worst part—if that’s any consolation—will probably hit on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Uncertainty Ahead
While there’s some good information out there, we still need to keep in mind that “much uncertainty exists with the track after Debby crosses Florida.” The storm is moving into an area where steering currents are weak, meaning it may not take a straight line across the states. This uncertainty is something to keep an eye on.
For those living in Horry County, the forecast is particularly concerning. We could be looking at anywhere from 8 to 12 inches of rain spread out over several days. This could lead to some serious situations with life-threatening flash flooding possible. Southern Horry County could see extreme flooding rain, while other parts may experience major flooding issues.
Be Prepared for Flash Flooding
Residents, you should definitely prepare for potential flash flooding, urban flooding, and even the possibility that the Waccamaw River may feel the impact. If you live near the coast, it’s important to remember that the ocean will get rough starting Sunday, with dangerous surf and strong rip currents. Stay away from the water!
As if that weren’t enough, there’s even a risk of tornadoes in coastal areas. That’s not exactly what we want to hear! Right now, it’s a bit early to pinpoint which areas of Myrtle Beach could face the toughest challenges when it comes to flooding and storm damage. We’ll have to stay alert and see how this all unfolds.
Impact Beyond Myrtle Beach
It’s not just Myrtle Beach that needs to be on high alert; Debby is also expected to impact Charleston and Hilton Head. Charleston is in an extreme flooding zone, looking at around 16 to 20 inches of rain. Meanwhile, Hilton Head could potentially experience a staggering 20 to 30 inches of rainfall!
