Myrtle Beach Weather Update: Tropical Storm Chantal Weakens

Turbulent waves and stormy skies at Myrtle Beach during Tropical Storm Chantal

News Summary

Tropical Storm Chantal has weakened into a tropical depression after making landfall near Litchfield Beach. Despite the storm’s decrease in intensity, Myrtle Beach residents should remain cautious due to high winds, heavy rainfall, and rip currents at local beaches. The storm is expected to move north, with minimal risk of flooding but strong gusts up to 57 mph possible. Local authorities continue to advise against swimming in dangerous surf conditions as the storm’s effects linger.

Myrtle Beach Weather Update: Tropical Storm Chantal Weakens

Hey there, Myrtle Beach residents! As many of you might have noticed, Mother Nature has been up to some tricks lately, and we want to keep you in the loop. Tropical Storm Chantal, which crashed onto our shores this morning, has now weakened to a tropical depression. But that doesn’t mean we can let our guard down just yet!

Details of the Storm Situation

The National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC has issued an updated tropical cyclone statement that’s effective until 7 p.m. this Sunday. Currently, Chantal is about 70 miles west of Wilmington, NC, and around 50 miles north-northwest of Myrtle Beach, SC, moving at a steady pace of 9 mph with maximum sustained winds dropping to 35 mph. What a trip it’s been!

Rain and Wind Effects

Expect some heavy rainfall in areas like Robeson County, NC, with showers likely ending by noon today. Although things are looking better, don’t be surprised if you see a few light sprinkles throughout the day. The good news? The risk of significant flooding appears to be minimal at this time.

That said, don’t underestimate those winds! The Myrtle Beach area could still feel gusts reaching between 39-57 mph. We’ve already recorded winds up to 54 mph in Myrtle Beach and 48 mph in North Myrtle Beach, which might lead to some sporadic power outages and downed trees. It’s always a good idea to double-check those flashlights and batteries!

Surf’s Up – Caution at the Beach

While the storm has weakened, we need to talk about the surf conditions. Brace yourselves for some strong rip currents and dangerous surf at all our lovely beaches, which could see breaking wave heights reaching about six feet! Life-threatening rip currents will be a reality through early next week, so beachgoers should definitely steer clear of swimming in these risky conditions.

Localized flooding concerns have lessened significantly in Horry County since the tropical storm warning was lifted, but stay cautious nonetheless. A high surf warning and small craft advisory are still in effect, so if you’re thinking about venturing out on the water, take that into account!

What’s Next for Chantal?

Chantal made its landfall near Litchfield Beach around 4 a.m. this morning and is expected to continue its path inland. It’s moving north, which means we’ll start to see the storm’s effects fade off as it makes its way toward North Carolina by July 7. But don’t let your guard down yet—monitoring updates is key!

Though there is a low risk of isolated tornadoes associated with this system, the major concern continues to be the strong winds and rough surf. A storm surge could rise up to 3 feet in certain areas, and although we don’t expect much more rainfall, remember to keep an eye out for situation updates as they come in.

Community Tips

Residents are encouraged to check in on your neighbors and lend a hand where possible. If you see fallen branches or trees, remember to use caution when clearing it up. And let’s do our part in keeping the community safe!

In summary, Tropical Storm Chantal may have lost some of its bite, but it reminds us that weather can be unpredictable. Take care of yourselves and stay safe out there as we ride out the last remnants of this storm!
