Severe Weather Alert for Statesboro: Tornado Watch Issued

Hi there, Statesboro! As we gear up for what looks to be a somewhat stormy Sunday, there’s some important news you should be aware of. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston, South Carolina has issued a tornado watch for parts of Georgia and South Carolina, and yes, that includes our very own Bulloch County. This watch will be in effect until 1:00 PM EST today, December 29, 2024.

What Areas Are Affected?

In addition to Bulloch County, the watch stretches over several other counties, so if you live in or around the following cities, you’ll want to stay alert: Statesboro, Savannah, Hilton Head Island, Beaufort, Charleston, North Charleston, Summerville, and many more. It’s a broad area, so everyone should pay close attention.

What to Expect?

During a tornado watch, it’s key to be prepared and informed. The watch means conditions are favorable for the development of a tornado in our area. While we hope for the best, we always want to be ready just in case. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on updates and stay tuned to local weather channels, NOAA Weather Radio, or any reliable news source. They’ll provide timely updates on what’s happening with the weather.

Stay Safe with CodeRED

In light of this tornado watch, we have some good news to share! The City of Statesboro and Bulloch County are working together to implement the CodeRED system, a high-speed emergency notification service created by OnSolve. This system is designed to keep residents safe by providing quick alerts about emergencies, bad weather, or any important situations that could arise.

Public safety officials across the country credit CodeRED notifications with saving lives in various situations, from helping to locate missing children to providing timely evacuation alerts. Seriously, having this kind of information at your fingertips can make a world of difference. If you haven’t yet signed up, now might just be the perfect time. It’s quick and easy to add to your phone!

Be Prepared

Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind during this tornado watch:

  • Stay Informed: Keep your radio on, phone charged, and check reliable sources for the latest updates.
  • Have a Plan: Know where to go in case you need to take cover quickly—preferably a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of your home.
  • Prepare an Emergency Kit: Make sure you have the essentials—water, medication, flashlight, and batteries. It’s always better to be prepared.

We’re Here for You

As the day progresses, we will continue to monitor the weather and provide updates as they become available. Your safety is the top priority, so please take these warnings seriously. We truly hope for calm weather ahead, but it’s always a good idea to stay one step ahead.

In the midst of all this, remember to take care of one another. Reach out to neighbors who may need assistance, and keep a friendly eye on those who might be more vulnerable. We are all in this together! Stay safe, Statesboro!
