The James Fisher Memorial Foundation YMCA is set to host its groundbreaking ceremony on January 30, 2024. This event marks the beginning of a substantial community project in Hardeeville, promising recreational facilities and community engagement opportunities. The YMCA will be part of the East Argent development, which includes housing and recreational spaces, marking a pivotal milestone for the area’s growth.
On January 30, 2024, at 11:30 a.m., the James Fisher Memorial Foundation YMCA will hold its groundbreaking ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the community of Hardeeville. This highly anticipated event will take place at 11010 East Argent Parkway in Ridgeland, a location poised to serve not just Jasper County but also the surrounding areas.
The James Fisher Memorial Foundation YMCA is part of the ambitious East Argent development project, which is recognized as the largest planned development in Hardeeville’s history. Announced in 2017, this expansive project promises to transform the region with nearly 10,000 homes and apartments, alongside 1.5 million square feet dedicated to retail and office space. Additionally, the development will incorporate 1,330 acres set aside for recreational and passive park space, ensuring ample opportunities for outdoor activities and community gatherings.
Originally slated for construction to commence in December 2022, the project faced delays due to permitting challenges. After lengthy planning processes beginning in 2021 and a master plan approval achieved in May 2023, the foundation is excited to finally break ground on this vital community resource.
The construction of the YMCA has garnered significant financial backing, receiving a $1.5 million allocation from the federal spending package for 2023. Additionally, a $12.7 million loan from the Department of Agriculture specifically targets projects in Jasper County, further facilitating the build-out of the YMCA facility.
Notably, the land for the YMCA was generously donated by Jack Fisher, CEO of Preserve Communities, contributing 20 acres to the project that honors his late son through the James Fisher Memorial Foundation, which was established in 2019.
The first phase of the new YMCA facility is set to encompass 35,000 square feet and is projected for completion within 12-18 months following the groundbreaking. Plans for a second phase include adding even more amenities, including a basketball gym that promises to attract sports enthusiasts of all ages.
The YMCA has outlined an impressive array of facilities, which will include an Aquatics Complex, Wellness Center, and Group Exercise Studio. Families can look forward to a Cafe, Certified Preschool, Childcare services, an Adventure Zone, and Sports Fields for various athletic activities.
Programming at the YMCA will cater to the needs of all community members, featuring youth sports, after-school care, swim lessons, and wellness education initiatives aimed at promoting public health, particularly for senior citizens.
This YMCA is more than just a building; it is envisioned as a central hub for community activity, designed to foster health, wellness, and social connections among its patrons. With the nearest existing YMCA located over 30 miles away in Port Royal, this new facility will greatly enhance access to recreational and wellness programs for residents in the area.
Scenic trails and green spaces integrated into the development will enhance outdoor recreational opportunities, inviting families and individuals to engage with nature while promoting an active lifestyle in the community.
The groundbreaking event is open to the public, providing an opportunity for community members to learn more about the project and its long-lasting impact on the region. As construction progresses, updates on the project will be shared through the YMCA’s website and various social media platforms.
With significant support from local leaders, funding institutions, and the community, the James Fisher Memorial Foundation YMCA represents a bold commitment to fostering a healthier, more connected community for years to come.
