Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in the Carolinas and Capital Region

Dark storm clouds and lightning over the Carolinas

Carolinas, September 5, 2025

News Summary

Severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued across the Carolinas and Capital Region, affecting areas such as Laurens and Union counties. The National Weather Service warns of strong winds, heavy rainfall, and the potential for lightning strikes. Residents are urged to seek shelter and prepare for possible flooding and hydroplaning hazards while driving. As storms are expected to intensify, staying informed and safe is crucial during this weather event.

Thunderstorm Warnings Across the Carolinas and Capital Region: What You Need to Know

Hey there, folks! If you’re enjoying a peaceful evening in the Carolinas or the Capital Region, you might want to pay attention because severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued. The National Weather Service (NWS) made the announcement late Friday night, letting everyone know about strong thunderstorms brewing in the area.

What’s Happening?

It all kicked off around 12:30 a.m. when the NWS in Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina, alerted residents in Laurens and Union counties that they need to be on the lookout. The warning is effective until 1:15 a.m. Did someone say windy? You bet! Gusts of wind could reach up to 40 mph, which is strong enough to knock down some tree limbs and send unsecured items flying around. Nobody wants their garden furniture taking a joyride!

As of 12:29 a.m., Doppler radar spotted some pretty intense thunderstorms stretching from about 11 miles northwest of Union to 9 miles east of Laurens, moving at a good clip of about 25 mph. This means if you’re in areas like Union, Monarch Mill, or even the lovely Rose Hill State Park, it’s time to get indoors!

Safety First!

During these tumultuous times, your safety is crucial. If you’re outside when the storm rolls in, make a point to find shelter. Remember, thunderstorms can cause lots of trouble, not just with high winds but also with lightning. On a related note, did you know that roughly 25 million lightning strikes occur annually in the United States, mostly in the warmer months? It’s a stark reminder to take cover when storms are looming!

The NWS reports that each year, we tragically see about 20 fatalities due to lightning strikes. The likelihood of being struck increases as the storm nears. So, if the storm is overhead, it’s best to stay inside until it passes.

Hydroplaning: A New Hazard

If you’re thinking about driving during this weather, another hazard you should know about is hydroplaning. This happens when a vehicle loses traction on wet roads. It’s particularly risky with speeds, wet pavements, and worn tires all factoring in. Stay safe out there!

What About the Capital Region?

Moving to the Capital Region, a separate severe thunderstorm warning was issued earlier on July 20, 2025, for wind speeds up to a whopping 60 mph. Parts of Albany, Fulton, Montgomery, and several other counties were warned of potentially damaging winds. This storm was initially tracked near Delanson, with winds already breezing at 40 mph and even penny-sized hail reported. Talk about a mixed bag from Mother Nature!

Heavy rainfall expected from these storms can lead to flash floods and perhaps flooded roadways. It’s definitely advisable to ride out these storms in an interior room of your home and, if you witness any damage, report it through email or social media.

Looking Ahead: What to Expect

On March 31, keep your umbrellas handy! A Severe Thunderstorm Watch will be in effect across multiple counties starting at 2 p.m. and concluding at 7 p.m. So, if you’re in the Charlotte Metro area, expect strong storms to roll in around 2 p.m. and hang around until about 6 p.m.

The NWS has indicated that damaging wind gusts and even isolated tornadoes could occur! Now that will certainly add some excitement to your afternoon!

So, hang tight and be prepared. Your safety is the priority!

FAQs

What should I do during a severe thunderstorm warning?

Seek shelter indoors and stay away from windows. If you’re outside, move to a sturdy building or a vehicle. Avoid using electrical appliances and stay tuned to weather updates.

How can I prepare for potential flooding during a storm?

Ensure your gutters and drains are clear, have an emergency kit ready with essentials, and stay away from flood-prone areas.

What is hydroplaning and how can I prevent it?

Hydroplaning occurs when a vehicle’s tires lose traction on wet roads. To prevent it, slow down in wet conditions, ensure your tires are well maintained, and avoid sudden maneuvers.
