Known for founding Coastal Restaurants and Bars, including the iconic Reilley’s Grill and Bar, Reilley significantly shaped the local culinary landscape. His dedication to community and personal connections made his restaurants beloved staples on the island. Reilley’s legacy will continue through his family and the establishments he created, highlighting his impact on the region’s culture and hospitality. His contributions are fondly remembered as the island mourns this significant loss.

Hilton Head Island, SC – Thomas Reilley, a celebrated figure in Hilton Head’s food and hospitality scene, died on May 2, 2025, after a three-month battle with severe health issues. He passed away shortly after celebrating his 78th birthday in the hospital. Reilley’s death is particularly poignant for the local community, as it marks the third significant loss from Hilton Head’s food and beverage industry this year.

Reilley was the founder of Coastal Restaurants and Bars, which encompasses several beloved establishments on Hilton Head Island. His journey in the restaurant business began in 1982 with the opening of Reilley’s Grill and Bar, which quickly became a foundational part of the island’s culinary landscape. The original location of this restaurant was lost to a fire in 1995; however, the business relocated across the street and continued to thrive.

Reilley’s Grill and Bar was remodeled in 2004 but preserved its family-oriented environment, becoming well-known for its welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant was often described as a place where patrons felt like family, reminiscent of the popular TV show “Cheers.” His commitment to community and customer connections set a standard in the hospitality sector.

Thomas Reilley was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and grew up in Warwick as the oldest of eight siblings. His early experiences shaped his values, emphasizing the significance of family gatherings and a robust work ethic instilled by working in his grandfather’s marble and tile company from a young age. In 1977, Tom and his wife, Diane, relocated to Hilton Head Island, beginning a transformative journey that led to the foundation of their family-run restaurant empire.

Before launching his restaurant career, Reilley held the role of banquet manager at the Hyatt Regency, while Diane worked at Calibogue Seafood House. The establishment of their first restaurant was a turning point that would eventually grow into a collection of eight restaurants across 11 locations, including popular spots like The Crazy Crab and Fish Camp.

Tom Reilley was known for his personal touch, often remembering the names of his customers and cultivating a sense of belonging. He dedicated himself tirelessly to his work, often engaging deeply with both staff and patrons. After his children matured, they began to play pivotal roles in the family business, with his eldest daughter Erin stepping into the role of managing partner at Reilley’s.

Throughout his life, Tom Reilley’s impact extended beyond his restaurants. He played a crucial role in establishing Hilton Head’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. His contributions to the community were recognized in 2018 when he received the John Curry Tourism Award from the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce.

Despite facing his final health challenges with tenacity, Reilley passed away surrounded by loved ones, demonstrating the depth of his family bonds. He leaves behind a legacy not only through his culinary ventures but also as a father figure to many in the community. His funeral is scheduled for May 13, 2025, at Holy Family Catholic Church on Hilton Head Island. The family, led by his son Brendan Reilley, is committed to continuing the legacy of growth and service established by their father.
