Spartanburg Day tennis players celebrating their SCISA championship victory

News Summary

The Spartanburg Day varsity tennis team has secured its second consecutive SCISA championship after a thrilling match against Hilton Head Prep. With a final score of 5-4, the championship was decided in the last doubles match where Nathan Harris and Charlie Forgerty triumphed. Coach Bob Allsbrook, continuing his legacy of success, praised his team’s resilience and discussed the bright future ahead despite losing two seniors this year. The team’s strong performance in singles and doubles matches showcased their determination and teamwork throughout the season.

Spartanburg, SC – The Spartanburg Day varsity tennis team has clinched its second consecutive SCISA championship, emerging victorious over Hilton Head Prep with a nail-biting final score of 5-4. The championship match unfolded over nearly five hours and was ultimately decided by the last doubles match, in which the number two duo of Nathan Harris and Charlie Forgerty secured the decisive victory.

In a tightly contested battle, Spartanburg Day split the six singles matches evenly at 3-3, while also splitting the first two doubles matches, leading to a dramatic conclusion where every point counted. The team’s strong performance in the singles matches included wins from sophomore Charlie Forgerty, junior Bradley Johnson Jr., and Price Nelson, while Hilton Head Prep claimed victory in the remaining singles matches.

Coach Bob Allsbrook’s strategic guidance was instrumental in rallying the team. Encouragement provided to Harris in the final doubles match contributed to the triumphant moment when Harris executed a decisive return volley that clinched the championship title for Spartanburg Day.

This win continues a legacy of success for Allsbrook, who has been coaching at Spartanburg Day since 1987 and has amassed a total of 20 state titles, including 13 at Spartanburg Day. Despite the team losing two seniors this year, Allsbrook remains optimistic about the future, noting the potential impact of strong incoming players such as freshman Henry Gosnell and 7th grader Parker Wilson.

Last season, Spartanburg Day did not face Hilton Head Prep due to SCISA realignment, which added another layer of intensity to this year’s match. The performance of Spartanburg Day players has been motivated by their previous match when Hilton Head Prep celebrated prematurely, and this fueled their determination to perform at their best during the finals.

The singles competition saw significant victories: Forgerty won his match with a dominating score of 6-2, 6-2; Johnson Jr. secured a 6-3, 6-2 win at two singles, while Nelson’s match ended with a score of 7-5, 6-4. The doubles lineup consisted of John Nelson at number one doubles, alongside Johnson and Greer at number three doubles. The thrilling conclusion of the match underscores the competitive spirit prevalent in SCISA tennis.

Looking ahead, Coach Allsbrook anticipates an exciting rematch with Hilton Head Prep next season. He emphasizes a mantra that has served the team well: focusing on winning each match to remain undefeated moving forward. As Allsbrook prepares to depart for a two-week stint in Barbados as a tennis instructor, he leaves behind a team geared up for continued success and a commitment to excellence in tennis.

As Spartanburg Day’s tennis players celebrate their hard-earned championship, they reflect on a season filled with competitive spirit, teamwork, and determination, setting a strong foundation for future successes in the sport.
