News Summary

A fatal accident on Interstate 95 in Orangeburg County left couple Kyle and Sara Greene from North Carolina dead and their child hospitalized. The crash involved their Chevrolet Equinox colliding with a dump truck, marking a concerning trend in roadway fatalities in South Carolina as investigations continue.

South Carolina – A tragic accident occurred on Interstate 95 in Orangeburg County early Tuesday morning, claiming the lives of a couple from Fuquay Varina, North Carolina. Kyle Greene, 32, and his wife, Sara E. Greene, 33, were involved in a collision at approximately 12:45 a.m. that left their child hospitalized, while the driver of the other vehicle escaped unharmed.

The crash, investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, involved the Greene’s 2019 Chevrolet Equinox and a 1987 dump truck. The couple’s vehicle reportedly collided with the rear of the dump truck near the junction with Interstate 26 at the 87-mile marker.

Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle confirmed that both Kyle and Sara Greene died at the scene due to multiple blunt force injuries. Their child, who was a back-seat passenger in the Chevy SUV, was transported to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia; however, details regarding the child’s condition remain unclear.

The dump truck driver, who was the sole occupant of that vehicle, did not sustain any injuries from the crash. At this point, it is also unknown whether any of the occupants in the Chevrolet Equinox were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

Investigation and Statistics

The cause of the collision is currently under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The tragic incident adds to a growing tally of roadway fatalities in the state. As of May 6, 2025, South Carolina has reported 270 fatalities on its roads this year. The total number of fatalities for the entire year of 2024 was recorded at 948.

Orangeburg County has seen seven fatalities from vehicle crashes in 2025 thus far, contrasting with 46 deaths in the county for the entirety of 2024. These statistics highlight the ongoing concerns regarding road safety in the region.

Community Response

Coroner Fogle expressed condolences for the Greene family during this difficult time and urged the community to keep the surviving child in their thoughts and prayers. The impact of this tragedy is being felt deeply in the local community and raises awareness about the importance of road safety and caution while driving.

Conclusion

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with driving, particularly in unforeseen circumstances. As investigations continue, families and communities are left to cope with the loss and support one another in their grieving process.
