For Lenore Gleason, supporting the growth of young children isn’t just a hobby—it is a lifelong calling. Now a dedicated Board Member for The Sandbox: An Interactive Children’s Museum, Lenore’s journey from the classroom to community philanthropist is a testament to the power of local giving.
Lenore’s roots in child development run deep. An education major who spent her early career teaching high school, she went on to earn her Master’s degree in Child Development and Family Relations. For a decade, she taught preschool and kindergarten, years that solidified her belief in the necessity of hands-on learning, imagination, and safe spaces where children can thrive.
Long before she joined the leadership of The Sandbox, Lenore was a frequent visitor. She spent countless joyful days exploring the museum with her ten grandchildren. As a grandparent member, she built memories that outlasted their early years.
Today, most of those grandchildren have moved on to high school and college, but one lucky little one is still discovering the magic of the museum. When Jim Gant, a longtime supporter and board member, encouraged Lenore to join The Sandbox Board after the Gleasons retired to the area, it felt like a natural extension of her devotion to children.
Lenore brought both her professional experience and her heart to the museum’s mission, but she didn’t come alone. Lenore and her husband, Marty, along with their family, have become pillars of support for The Sandbox.
The Gleason Foundation—which includes Lenore, Marty, and their three daughters—continues to fund meaningful projects throughout the Lowcountry community. Notably, when the new building campaign began, their daughter’s store, The Chocolate Canopy, generously funded the beloved castle exhibit that now welcomes families into a world of imagination.
With thoughtful guidance from trusted advisors, the family foundation exists for one purpose: to give back and share the blessings they have received.
Lenore traces this passion for philanthropy back to a simple lesson from her own mother many years ago: “If everyone just gave $1 or $2, it would make such a difference.”
It is a simple truth that speaks to the heart of The Sandbox’s mission today. Museums like this are priceless to the community, but they require care, resources, and continued investment to ensure every child—regardless of background—has access to the kind of play and discovery that changes lives.
Inspired by the Gleason family’s generosity, we invite you to join them in supporting The Sandbox. Together, we can keep the doors open, create new exhibits, and expand educational programs to build a brighter future for all children.
Your gift, no matter the size, truly makes a difference.
