News Summary

Savannah has appointed Jay Burke as the Grand Marshal for its 201st St. Patrick’s Day Parade, honoring his family legacy. The investiture ceremony included key tributes and performances, setting the stage for the upcoming celebrations. Burke expressed pride in his connection to the festival and is eager to lead the festivities on March 17, which will include a family march and blessings at the Cathedral. His father’s legacy as a past Grand Marshal further enriches this meaningful role for Burke.

Savannah has officially invested Jay Burke as the Grand Marshal for its 201st St. Patrick’s Day Parade, celebrating a family legacy and the start of the city’s festive season.

The investiture ceremony occurred on a Sunday, marking a significant step into the St. Patrick’s celebration. Key details include:

  • Burke’s sash includes a tribute: “In Loving Memory of Jimmy Burke 1935-2022.”
  • His father, Jimmy Burke, previously served as Grand Marshal in 1992.
  • The event featured musical performances by the St. Vincent’s Academy Chorale.
  • The Benedictine Military School Color Guard presented the U.S. and Irish flags.
  • The greening of the Forsyth Park fountain is scheduled for March 7.

Burke, who described his new role as a “lifetime honor,” has a deep-rooted connection to the festival, having aspired to this position long before his father’s Grand Marshal tenure. Committee Chairman Tim Mahoney noted:

  • Burke has occupied every elected position on the St. Patrick’s Day Committee board.
  • He is descended from the Burke Clan of County Cork, Ireland, with roots dating back to the mid-19th century potato famine.

On March 17, Burke will preside over various ceremonies, breakfasts, and festivities. He expressed that the day will be particularly meaningful, featuring Mass, a family march, and blessings at the Cathedral from the Bishop.

During his speech, Burke reflected on the hardships faced by Irish families in America, emphasizing the legacy and traditions of his family rather than his personal recognition. The Grand Marshal’s Medal was ceremoniously placed around his neck by his daughter, Caroline Burke.

As Savannah prepares for the upcoming celebrations, Burke’s heritage and commitment stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
