Hilton Head Art Festival

The Hilton Head Art Festival will take place from Friday to Sunday at Shelter Cove. Festival hours are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, while Sunday’s hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees can explore the works of dozens of artists who will be displaying and selling items such as paintings, photo prints, pottery, and jewelry.

Patriotic Choir Concert

On Sunday at 7:00 p.m., the Hilton Head Choral Society will present a special concert titled “America Sings!” at the First Presbyterian Church. This musical event features the Columbia-based brass quintet, Category V Brass. Tickets are priced at $30 for adults and $15 for children.

40th Original Gullah Festival

In Beaufort, the 40th Original Gullah Festival will take place from May 23-25 at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. This festival celebrates Gullah culture and offers free admission for a variety of inspiring activities, including performances, workshops, tours, and educational sessions. Visitors can enjoy traditional Gullah food, explore an arts and crafts market, and listen to live storytelling and music throughout the weekend.

Memorial Day Ceremonies

On Monday, two significant ceremonies will honor military service members. The Bluffton Township Memorial Day Ceremony, sponsored by American Legion Post 205, will be held at Veterans Memorial Park in Buckwalter Place Park at 11 a.m. The event will feature guest speaker Kathy Strong, who aims to purchase a memorial brick in every state. Concurrently, the Hilton Head Annual Memorial Day Ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial in Shelter Cove Community Park.

Travel and Traffic Updates

Travel experts at AAA project that over 3.5 million people will take to the skies over Memorial Day weekend, with significant flight activity expected. Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is preparing for increased passenger traffic, and travelers are advised to allow ample time for security checks and check-in. A record number of flights is anticipated, including nearly 54,000 on Thursday and over 51,000 on Friday. To accommodate the influx, new parking lots have been added at the airport, and travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with TSA guidelines and check for any airline updates concerning delays or cancellations.

In addition to air travel, AAA forecasts that approximately 45 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home by vehicle. Heavy traffic is expected, particularly on Thursday and Friday, prompting officials to recommend early departures to minimize wait times. Enhanced law enforcement presence will be visible throughout the weekend to promote safe driving practices.

The beaches of Hilton Head Island are set for a busy weekend, with an increase in visitors. Officials are making efforts to enhance accessibility, including the installation of Mobi-Mats and additional beach wheelchairs at various beach parks. Safety remains a priority, with officials urging individuals to avoid overestimating their swimming abilities and to respect local wildlife, such as sea turtles, by minimizing light exposure after 10 p.m.

With numerous activities, travel preparations, and safety measures in place, officials in Hilton Head, Bluffton, and Beaufort are ready for a vibrant and festive Memorial Day weekend.
