News Summary

Starting June 24, new parking rates for Hilton Head Island’s public beaches will be implemented, altering the previous pricing structure. Weekend rates will increase to $5 per hour, while weekday parking remains at $3 per hour without a daily cap, potentially raising long-term costs. Coligny Beach will remain free for visitors, as the town council considers future parking policies. Residents can apply for up to two free parking permits, ensuring accessibility while maintaining funds for beach maintenance through the collected fees.

Hilton Head Island – Starting June 24, 2025, new parking rates for public beaches on Hilton Head Island will be implemented, significantly changing the previous pricing structure. Weekend parking will shift to a rate of $5 per hour, replacing the flat rate of $20 for a whole day. Meanwhile, weekday parking will maintain a $3 per hour fee but will lose its $15 daily cap, resulting in potentially higher costs for long-term parking.

The revisions to the parking fees are part of broader changes enacted following a fee increase that occurred on March 1, 2025. Hilton Head Island’s town leaders have indicated these adjustments are being made in response to community feedback, reflecting a re-evaluation of the island’s parking structure in light of changing demands.

New parking rates will apply across all public beaches on Hilton Head Island, with the exception of Coligny Beach, which is currently free of charge for visitors. The future parking policy for Coligny Beach is under review, given its popularity among beachgoers and its proximity to various local businesses.

In an effort to accommodate residents, Hilton Head Island offers up to two free parking permits per household for public beach access. Residents can apply online for these permits to benefit from free parking options. Additionally, parking is free for vehicles displaying qualifying veterans’ license plates or handicap tags, irrespective of the owner’s residency status.

All parking fees collected will be reinvested back into the maintenance operations of the beaches. This approach addresses previous concerns where residents were perceived to be shouldering the financial burden of beach upkeep.

Furthermore, the town council has turned down suggestions for implementing a $100 parking pass exclusively for Beaufort County residents. They confirmed that parking for Hilton Head residents who apply will remain free. Parking enforcement will commence daily, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, ensuring compliance with the new fee structure.

The town council has also engaged in discussions regarding potential future parking pass options for visitors, focusing on creating reasonable solutions that incorporate community considerations and address the common concerns raised by local residents.

This overhaul of parking rates aims to strike a balance between generating revenue for beach maintenance while also ensuring that both residents and visitors have access to the island’s cherished coastal areas. The revisions reflect an ongoing commitment from the town to facilitate a sustainable and enjoyable beach experience for all.
