David Richard Phillips, a beloved figure in the Sudbury community and a talented architect, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2025, at the age of 69 after a courageous battle with cancer. Surrounded by loved ones, David’s legacy will not only be remembered in his stunning architectural designs but also in the hearts of his family and friends who cherished his unwavering spirit and artistic brilliance.
Phillips was celebrated as the loving husband of Theresa Ann Phillips for an impressive 29 years. His commitment to family extended to his roles as a devoted father and affectionate “Gramps” to his grandson, Miles Jones. He was proud to call Kaylan Jones and her husband Jason, as well as Thomas Phillips and his wife Emily, his own. The strong familial bonds crafted by David were a cornerstone of his life.
Born in Syosset, NY, David was raised by his parents, Evelyn and Richard (Dick) Phillips, alongside his siblings Christopher, Leslie, Stacy, and Michael. In 1971, the family made the move to Westford, MA, where young David thrived as a student at Westford Academy. His academic journey culminated with a degree in Architecture from the renowned University of Miami in 1978, an achievement that would set the stage for a vibrant career.
Following his graduation, David spent several years working for remodeling and renovation firms in the Miami area before returning to Massachusetts in the 1980s. His architectural talent flourished as he took on various roles at prominent design companies. Most notably, he dedicated nearly 15 years as an Architect and Estimator at Construction Management and Development Corporation in Wellesley.
In a bold move, David established his own design and consultation services for residential and commercial projects from his home in Sudbury between 2009 and 2014. He ultimately lent his expertise to Fallon Custom Homes until retiring in 2019. Throughout his career, his impressive artistic abilities and great taste earned him several accolades, including the prestigious “Best of Houzz” award for five consecutive years between 2012 and 2017.
Beyond his architectural prowess, David was renowned as a fantastic family man, a reliable neighbor, and a cherished uncle and brother-in-law in both the Phillips and Magennis families. In his spare time, he immersed himself in personal projects, including an array of hobbies such as coin collecting, furniture making, and home improvements.
In addition to his many talents, David was an avid golfer, once achieving a hole-in-one at Sandy Burr Golf Club in Wayland, MA, in 1994. He found immense joy in playing at his parents’ community course at Moss Creek in Hilton Head Island, SC, and sharing those moments with family.
After retiring, David rediscovered his passion for art and became an acclaimed watercolor artist. His stunning landscapes, houses, and portraits captured the beauty of life and nature, showcasing his incredible talent and creativity. Art enthusiasts and admirers can view his artistic portfolio on his Instagram page, allowing his legacy to live on through his creations.
The community is invited to pay their respects at the services held at Duckett Funeral Home in Sudbury, MA, on February 1, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend and share in celebrating David’s amazing life.
