A serious six-vehicle collision on U.S. 278 in Bluffton resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries on Monday afternoon. The crash occurred at the intersection of U.S. 278 and White Oak Circle and involved three eastbound and three westbound vehicles.

In total, 10 occupants were involved in the accident. Emergency services transported three individuals to a local hospital for medical treatment. Unfortunately, one driver sustained fatal injuries, confirmed by the local coroner on the scene around 3 p.m.

According to updates from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Trooper Nichols Pye reported that earlier statements mistakenly indicated five vehicles were involved; however, this was later corrected to six. Traffic in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 278 near Rose Hill was reopened after 5 p.m., following extensive cleanup and investigation efforts by law enforcement and emergency responders.

The crash led to significant traffic delays in the Bluffton area, impacting bus schedules for the Beaufort County School District. To manage the situation, the southbound lanes of U.S. 278 were blocked off, forcing drivers to redirect to the westbound lane. Eight units from Bluffton Fire and EMS responded to the scene to provide assistance.

In an unfortunate turn of events, a secondary collision occurred shortly after the initial accident at the intersection of Bluffton Parkway and Trotting Hill Lane. This incident was cleared shortly after, with no additional serious injuries reported.

The vehicle lineup involved in the crash included a flatbed trailer carrying lumber, contributing to the complexity of the scene. Authorities on-site advised drivers to adhere to instructions provided by law enforcement and to expect delays when traveling toward Hilton Head Island.

This accident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers on busy highways and the need for vigilance while driving. As the investigation continues, authorities will focus on determining the exact cause of the collision and if any charges will be filed.

Accidents like this underline the importance of adhering to safety regulations and driving attentively, particularly in high-traffic areas. The community is urged to stay informed and exercise caution in similar conditions as investigations into traffic incidents are regularly updated.
