Beaufort Memorial Opens New Career Development Center
Beaufort, South Carolina – On July 22, Beaufort Memorial Hospital (BMH) officially opened its new state-of-the-art Career Development Center, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the local health care workforce. The new 6,340 square-foot facility was developed in collaboration with the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB), Beaufort County, the City of Beaufort, and the Beaufort Memorial Foundation.
Providing Advanced Training Opportunities
The Career Development Center is designed to provide hands-on training and classroom education for both current and future health care professionals. This initiative is particularly timely, as it comes against the backdrop of ongoing nursing shortages exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The center is projected to nearly double the number of graduates from USCB’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, increasing from 42 to 72 students each year.
Key Features of the Center
The facility features two large classrooms and four clinical simulation labs, allowing for an immersive learning environment. The simulation labs are equipped with realistic hospital room replicas and life-like interactive patient “manikins” which enable students to practice various clinical scenarios using real medical equipment. This setup ensures that students receive relevant training with the tools they will use in actual patient care at BMH.
A Community Investment
BMH President and CEO Russell Baxley emphasized the importance of the center by stating, “This project is a critical investment in the future of our community.” He noted that the education center would significantly contribute to BMH’s mission of improving the quality of life in the Lowcountry through targeted education and training.
The planning for the center commenced in late 2021, addressing the pressing concerns surrounding nursing shortages. Financial backing began to materialize in 2022, with Beaufort County and USCB each contributing $500,000 for construction costs, facilitated in part by Senator Lindsey Graham’s direction of $1 million in Congressionally Directed Spending.
Funding and Future Prospects
In 2023, the Beaufort City Council allocated an additional $1.5 million through a grant to boost healthcare workforce development programs operating within the center. Following this, in 2024, the city approved another $1 million from the State’s Fiscal Year 2024 General Appropriations Act, which includes funding dedicated to scholarships and clinical training for aspiring health care workers.
To date, the BMH Foundation has successfully raised $1 million to support ongoing workforce development programs, scholarships, and construction efforts.
Pathway to Success
The center will also bolster the People Achieving their Highest (PATH) program, which offers professional development and education for mid-career and aspiring health care professionals. Since its inception in May 2022, the PATH program has seen 57 graduates, boasting a 97 percent pass rate for those taking national certifications, surpassing the national average.

Dr. Kim Dudas, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at USCB, expressed gratitude for the contributions from local government, stating, “The vision for the center has become a reality, and this partnership benefits the entire community.” Joy Solomon, director of BMH’s education department, noted that the collaboration between USCB and BMH education teams promises transformative benefits for those pursuing careers in health care.
Dr. Christina Beall, chair of USCB’s nursing department, added that this partnership is essential in addressing nursing shortages, particularly in rural communities, providing students with state-of-the-art educational experiences while enabling professional interactions with seasoned healthcare professionals.
The new Career Development Center is located on the second floor of the Beaufort Memorial Medical and Administrative Center at 990 Ribaut Road. As the community looks ahead, this center stands as a significant step towards enhancing health care education and addressing workforce needs.
