Speed Limit Change on William Hilton Parkway for Safety

Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Effective October 22, 2024, the speed limit on William Hilton Parkway has officially been changed to 40 miles per hour. This reduction comes as a result of a request from the Town of Hilton Head Island, aimed at enhancing safety for both motorists and pedestrians along this busy stretch of road.

Previously set at 45 mph, the speed limit signs have now been replaced with new 40 mph signage. The area impacted by this speed limit change extends between Beach City Road and Dillon Road. For those traversing this route, it’s a good time to pay extra attention to the new limits.

Why the Change? Safety First!

Safety has been a growing concern on William Hilton Parkway. With the area seeing an increase in both vehicle traffic and pedestrian activity, local officials felt that reducing the speed limit would help to create a safer environment for everyone. Jim Iwanicki, the Transportation Program Manager for the town, emphasized that keeping both drivers and pedestrians safe is a top priority.

“By lowering the speed limit, we hope to decrease the chances of accidents and improve overall traffic safety,” says Iwanicki. “Walking or biking along this route shouldn’t feel dangerous, and we believe this slight adjustment will make a real difference.”

What’s Next? Ongoing Improvements

In addition to the speed limit change, the Town of Hilton Head Island is planning to implement further safety improvements in the coming months. The upgrades are designed to accommodate everyone on the road:

  • Improved crosswalks to enhance visibility
  • Pedestrian signals at more intersections
  • Better lighting along the roadway

All improvements will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, ensuring accessibility for all. Pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers are reminded to be extra cautious as this work gets underway.

Keep Safety in Mind

As these changes take effect, officials are encouraging everyone to keep safety at the forefront. It’s essential to adhere to the new speed limit, especially in areas that see a lot of pedestrian traffic. Whether you’re walking your dog, cycling for exercise, or just taking a stroll, make sure to stay alert!”
