Savannah Celebrates Local Student’s Groundbreaking Achievement in Film
Savannah is buzzing with excitement as one of its own, Jeffery Glover, has made history by becoming the first student from Savannah State University (SSU) to graduate from the Georgia Film Academy (GFA) under a new partnership. It’s not just a personal triumph for Glover; it marks a significant milestone for SSU and its growing media program.
With a bright future ahead, Glover graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications, achieving the honor of Magna Cum Laude in May 2024. He complemented this accomplishment by earning a certification in film and television production from the GFA just a few months later, in the summer of 2024. It’s been a journey of dedication, hard work, and, most importantly, a leap of faith.
A Journey That Started with Service
Before diving into the world of film and communications, Glover spent six years serving in the United States Army as an artilleryman. It’s safe to say that going to college wasn’t always on his radar. “Going to college was never really a part of the journey,” he reflected. “So, I’d say that pushing through and completing college, with honors, and a film certificate at the same time is something I can be proud of.”
Glover entered SSU in Fall 2021 as a multimedia and digital communications student. The Journalism Mass Communication (JMC) department quickly became his creative playground, allowing him to explore various forms of communication and storytelling. With the support of the department’s chair, Dr. Juliana Trammel, Glover harnessed his passion for visual storytelling and put in the hard work necessary to thrive.
Mentorship and Growth
Dr. Trammel was a guiding force for Glover, ensuring he had all the resources and support needed to succeed. She stated, “Jeffery’s passion for visual storytelling and his relentless pursuit of excellence truly set him apart.” It’s clear that his commitment to honing his craft and facing challenges head-on played a significant role in becoming SSU’s first GFA graduate. “I just knew I had to do everything I could to make it possible for him,” she added.
Glover also praises the hands-on learning offered at GFA. “I enjoyed the hands-on experience, practicing what working on set would feel like in different positions,” he shared. His enthusiasm didn’t go unnoticed by his instructors, including Julio Saldarriaga, who mentioned Glover’s eagerness to learn and actively engage with the material. “His positive attitude and dedication to growth made him a pleasure to work with,” Saldarriaga noted.
A Bright Future Ahead
Already making his mark, Glover is currently working as a creative services producer at WSAV. Looking five years down the line, he sees himself continuing his journey in television or with a marketing agency, focusing on “big commercials.” With a clear vision for his future, Glover shared, “Something that will be continuous throughout will be the development of my own media company, as well as my efforts to be a successful film director.”
Empowering Future Filmmakers
The partnership between SSU and GFA began offering courses in the summer semester of 2024, and it’s proving to be an excellent opportunity for students from all majors. Dr. Trammel enthusiastically explains, “It opens doors to a world of creativity and professional development, allowing them to gain practical skills and industry insights that are invaluable in today’s competitive landscape.”
Glover’s story serves as an inspiring example for other students at Savannah State University. The opportunities available through the GFA partnership promise to empower the next generation of creative minds. So if you’re a student looking to explore your passion for film and media, take a cue from Glover and dive right in!
In a community that values growth and creativity, Savannah is proud to celebrate one of its own. The sky is indeed the limit for Jeffery Glover and many others who dare to follow their dreams!
