Severe Thunderstorms and Flash Flood Warnings in Lancaster County

Dramatic thunderstorm clouds with lightning over Lancaster County

News Summary

Lancaster County is on alert as severe thunderstorms and flash flood warnings are issued by the National Weather Service. Expected winds may reach up to 50 mph, and residents are urged to stay indoors as storms approach. The flash flood warning is active due to significant rainfall, and nearby areas in Nebraska are also feeling the impact. Safety precautions are advised as local conditions worsen.

Severe Thunderstorms and Flash Flood Warnings Hit Lancaster County and Surrounding Areas

Residents of Lancaster County, brace yourselves! A significant weather alert has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for some intense thunderstorms expected to roll through the region. The alert was broadcasted on Monday, June 16, 2025, at 6:46 p.m., and is set to last until 7:30 p.m. today.

Where Is It Happening?

The alert focuses on Northern Lancaster, Southern Lancaster, and Chesterfield County. Folks in these areas should be on high alert, as severe thunderstorms like this can wreak havoc. The NWS has warned that residents should prepare for winds gusting up to 50 mph. Yes, you read that right—50 mph!

Tracking the Storm

At the time of the alert, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms over Indian Land, moving eastward at about 20 mph. This means that if you live in the areas of Indian Land, Waxhaw, Andrew Jackson State Park, Van Wyck, Carolina Commons Shopping Center, or the Community of Almond Glen, it’s time to take those weather precautions seriously!

Lightning and Other Hazards

Did you know that lightning strikes the U.S. around 25 million times each year? Most of these strikes happen during the summer months and tragically lead to about 20 fatalities annually. The risk increases as the storm gets closer, hitting its highest point when the storm is directly above you. So, stay indoors when the thunder begins to rumble!

Severe Weather Warnings Across Nebraska

The weather front is making waves beyond Lancaster County as well. A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for a huge area of Nebraska, affecting 65 counties until midnight on June 17. Meteorologist Chris Franks projects the biggest weather impacts between 9-10 p.m. tonight. Expect showers and thunderstorms to drift southward from northern Nebraska, bringing along heavy downpours, thunder, lightning, and potentially damaging winds.

Although the chances of hail or tornadoes are low, it’s still a time to keep your eyes peeled for those ominous clouds. And speaking of weather, Lincoln’s forecast indicates that the heat index could creep up close to 100 degrees or even higher as the weekend approaches!

East Cocalico Township Tornado

In more weather-related news, a tornado was spotted in East Cocalico Township this past Sunday, zipping along at an astounding speed of 80-85 mph. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries, but the damage was enough to keep locals talking.

Flash Flood Warning in Effect

The weather woes don’t stop there. A flash flood warning is currently active for east-central Adams County, northwestern Lancaster County, and central York County. This warning is valid until 10 a.m. tomorrow, indicating that between 1 to 2 inches of rain have already fallen, with an additional half to one inch expected. So, remember, if you encounter flooded streets—turn around, don’t drown.

What to Expect Today

Looking at today’s weather, you can anticipate mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers and some hefty thunderstorms looming on the horizon. High temperatures will likely range between 72 and 76 degrees, so keep those umbrellas handy!

Stay Safe Out There!

With all this weather activity, it’s crucial to remain informed and prepared. If a storm approaches, don’t take any chances—pick a secure place indoors, stay away from windows, and wait it out. Stay safe, Lancaster County!
