It all started back in 2010 when a passionate local, Zelda Tannenbaum, dared to dream of showcasing powerful documentaries in her hometown. After attending the Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride, Colorado, she was inspired to bring that same experience to Savannah. Since those early days, the festival has blossomed from a simple one-night gathering to a vibrant two-day extravaganza featuring over eight feature-length and short-form documentaries.
A Focus on Inspiration and Education
The mountain film festival isn’t just about entertainment. It aims to inspire viewers about social and environmental change. In fact, over the years, the festival has partnered with local schools, reaching out to more than 11,000 students in the Savannah-Chatham area, allowing them to experience selected films right in their classrooms. With themes focusing on uplifting stories, the festival has truly been a beacon of education and awareness in the community.
Kicking Off with a Heartwarming Feature
This year’s festival kicks off on January 24 at 7 p.m. with “Between the Mountain and the Sky,” a gripping 92-minute documentary that tells the story of Maggie Doyne, who co-founded the Kopila Valley Children’s Home in Nepal. Her work with orphans and efforts to provide tuition-free education for over 400 students has been recognized worldwide. The film captured the Audience Award at the 2024 Mountainfilm Tour in Telluride, and it’s sure to be a hit here in Savannah too!
To add to the excitement, there will also be a beautifully shot 7-minute short film about traditional monks performing the Cham dance at the Indian Thiksey Monastery. Talk about a cultural feast!
