Beaufort University Moves Closer to NCAA Division II Membership

Beaufort, SC – The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) has received approval for the provisional year three in its transition to NCAA Division II membership. This announcement follows the recent meeting of the NCAA Division II Membership Committee and marks a crucial step before the university can achieve full membership status.

Celebrating a Milestone

Quin Monahan, USC Beaufort’s Director of Athletics, expressed his gratitude for the support and leadership that have promoted this progress. He particularly acknowledged the contributions from Genia Montford, Shawn Becker, the Peach Belt Conference staff, and Nancy Mitchell from Strategic Edge Consulting. Monahan stated, “This achievement is a testament to the hard work of many individuals.”

A Community Effort

Genia Montford highlighted the collective effort and commitment from different departments at the university, adding that this milestone is a celebration for the entire Sand Sharks community. “We’ve all come together to make this happen,” she said.

Engagement and Competition

In the previous year, the Peach Belt Conference allowed all member institutions— including provisional members like USC Beaufort— to compete in postseason play. This change enabled USCB’s women’s soccer team to take part in the Peach Belt Championship, where they advanced to the second round of penalty kicks against Lander. The transition to NCAA Division II involves a three-year provisional period, with distinct benchmarks and strategic goals for each year.

Focus on Compliance and Governance

During its second year within the provisional period, USC Beaufort actively integrated itself into the Division II landscape, emphasizing compliance, governance, and competition in the Peach Belt Conference across 13 varsity sports. Shawn Becker noted that the strong partnerships formed with various campus departments have been crucial in enhancing the student-athlete experience. “These collaborations will only strengthen as we move forward in this final year of the provisional process,” he added.

Looking Ahead: National Championships

The successful completion of this three-year transition will allow USC Beaufort to become a full NCAA Division II and Peach Belt Conference member. This will enable the university to compete for national championships starting in the 2025-26 academic year. Monahan emphasized the importance of this progression as USC Beaufort approaches its 20th anniversary as a four-year institution, reaffirming the university’s dedication to providing excellent athletic experiences for its students and the surrounding community.

Impact on Local Sports

The advancement in NCAA membership not only signifies growth for the university but also enriches the local sports culture in Beaufort. With increased visibility and competitiveness at the national level, the Sand Sharks can inspire future generations of athletes in the community.

A Bright Future for USC Beaufort

As USC Beaufort continues to navigate the final year of its provisional status, the response from the community remains largely supportive. Students, faculty, and local residents are eager to witness the university’s continual progress. The administration’s concerted efforts will set a precedent for future transitions and developments within the athletics program.
