HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Food Lion is coming back to Hilton Head Island next week, with its new Port Royal Plaza store at 93 Mathews Drive set to open its doors Wednesday, Nov. 11, right after a 7:45 a.m. ribbon-cutting.

The grocer is filling the long-empty former Sam’s Club building with a 41,000 square-foot store. The store will keep daily hours of 7 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Shoppers can expect self-checkout lanes, ready-to-eat meals, pickup and delivery ordering, a walk-in garden cooler, sushi made in the store and a self-serve hot bar with wings. The chain also plans to stock items from local growers and makers.

Opening-day perks are aimed at early arrivals. The first 100 customers in line get a reusable shopping bag and a mystery gift card worth up to $200, with free food samples on hand. Through its hunger-relief program, Food Lion Feeds, the company will give 10 meals to partner agencies for each person waiting in line.

The return closes a gap of several years. Food Lion ran a store at 40 Palmetto Bay Road for 22 years before closing it in 2022 as part of a cutback of 113 underperforming locations.

The North Carolina-based chain said the island store is part of a push to open 10 new stores in 2026 and gives it 22 locations across the greater Savannah area.
