# AI shrinks computer science graduate hiring, UK data shows

Computer science graduates in the United Kingdom entered the professional workforce at sharply lower rates over the past two years, and new outcome data suggests the rise of artificial intelligence coding tools is one of the reasons the labor market for junior software work has thinned.

The share of computer science graduates whose first destination was a professional job as a coder or programmer fell to roughly 28 percent in the most recent year of survey data, down from about 40 percent previously. The share who landed any graduate-level occupation slid from more than 60 percent two years earlier to about 50 percent. Those figures come from the UK graduate outcomes survey, which collected responses from more than 350,000 former students, and were reported this month by a major British newspaper.

Matt Hiely-Rayner, a UK graduate labor-market analyst, told the newspaper the drop is consistent with AI systems taking on inexpensive, repetitive routine work in software development. Charlie Ball, a longer-standing observer of graduate hiring, said the software developer market had clearly shifted and that AI is difficult to rule out as a contributing factor, even though there is limited direct evidence proving cause. Ball added that pure coding positions were unusually scarce in 2025 and that computer science graduates are increasingly diversifying into related areas such as cybersecurity and network engineering.

The UK graduate signal fits inside a broader pattern. A recent labor-market analysis published by a British policy institute found that AI use is concentrated in a narrow set of occupations, with programmers, software developers, and technical writers among the roles where large language models take on the highest share of daily tasks. UK technology graduate positions were down 46 percent from 2023 to 2024, according to an industry data analysis, with a further decline projected through 2026. The technology sector was among those leading an 8 percent overall drop in UK graduate hiring during the 2024 to 2025 academic year, and a Handshake and BestColleges pulse of graduating students found that 28 percent of the computer science class of 2025 described themselves as very pessimistic about their prospects, a 10-point jump from the previous year’s cohort.

American students and their advisers are watching the UK data closely because entry-level coding jobs have historically been the fastest and clearest on-ramp into professional work for computer science majors on both sides of the Atlantic. If AI agents continue producing routine software and analysis quickly and cheaply, the pool of pure coding jobs available to new graduates may shrink further, even as demand grows for graduates who can pair coding skills with cybersecurity, data engineering, cloud architecture, or specialized domain knowledge. The near-term implication for undergraduates now choosing a major or a first internship is that a computer science degree still opens doors, but the doors it opens are moving.
